So in one my previous post I talked about how my daughter who has ADHD is struggling with forgetfulness. I asked my daughter to come up with a plan to help her remember to gather her things at school and not loose things. The purpose of allowing my daughter to come up with her own plan is so she can learn that while she may have a weakness for something that she is struggling with, she can learn how to cope with it. I have tried to give her my ideas and thoughts on ways to help, but she seems to of course forget, so I wanted to give her the opportunity to plan.

I told her that whatever plan that she came up with me and her dad would assist her in carrying out that plan. I don’t know what I was expecting from her, but she had until the Sunday before last to come up with it. She came downstairs ready to tell her dad and me her plan. So she said in a confident way, “I have come up with a great plan!” Her dad and I asked her what her plan was and she said “I will just have to remember”. That was her brilliant plan simply just to remember nothing more nothing less so of course we wanted her to try this out.

She went to school throughout the week and by Thursday she had managed to remember to bring home all her things each day. I thought to myself, why didn’t we think of this long time ago.  We bought her these little circle sticky things that you can write on and put on her wall so that she can write on the things she needed to remember. I made a check sheet with a list of things she needed to bring home and put it in her agenda that she carries to school. If all we had to do was to tell her, don’t forget that would’ve saved us a lot of headache and time.

So the school week came and went, but her teacher gave her homework to do. They were having a test this Tuesday and she needed to study for it. She sat down on Sunday to study for her test, but she didn’t have her notes or her textbook. She had forgotten them. She was so upset and felt that she had let herself down. I could have lectured her on how it is important to always remember to bring home your things, but she was really trying. I helped her come up with a game plan on how she was going to make up for the study time she lost. Then I told her she had done really good this week, bringing home all her things. No one is perfect, but the effort she gave was great.

For now, she is still sticking to her current plan of just trying to remember and of course I am there supporting her. But just in case this plan doesn’t work, we will regroup and start anew. I will be there every step of the way helping her not to forget!
